a curriculum full of variety

We know how to engage children so that they love to learn: themed topics, regular outings to the local beach and woods, and countless practical experiences during the school day.

Daily lessons in reading, phonics, spelling, handwriting, writing and maths build up the children's core skills. Wherever possible lessons are supported with technology to create learners fit for the future.

We are a national lead school for Talk for Writing – a scheme that first discusses the language that children will need for a particular topic, so that when they come to write it they have all the vocabulary they need.

our core valuesOur school values are all about pride. They encourage children to reflect on their character and how to build their confidence while showing respect and tolerance in all areas of life: to each other, to staff, to their families and to the wider school environment.

We call it POW: Pride of West St Leonards.

We support our pupils to use these values to grow up as responsible members of the community.

There are many ways they can be active members of the school community, too, including peer mediators, eco warriors and sports leaders.

where success is celebrated, children aim to succeed

We have high expectations for every child in our school.

We work with you, the parents and carers, to help children to reach their potential. We set homework and expect children to read daily at home.

Why? Because reading is everything. It is how we discover the world around us. It is how we learn to distinguish fact from fiction. And it feeds our imaginations. Children who take a love of reading into adulthood will become confident members of society.

When children reach their goals, we celebrate it and hold performances and exhibitions for the wider school community. We like to showcase the successes of all our year groups.

We are a family of schools

The University of Brighton Academies Trust is a family of infant, primary and secondary schools based in Sussex.

Working Together, Delivering Excellence, Achieving Ambitions, and Nurturing Potential are the values that guide us. We support each other, sharing insights and best practice so that we never stop improving.

Our mission is to inspire our children and staff to flourish and achieve their best. It is important to us that we positively impact our communities and that pupils understand the role they can play in the wider world.

We aim to create a vibrant, inclusive community, transforming lives and broadening horizons through excellent teaching and learning.
